Getting Kids to Wear Socks When It's Cold

Practical tips to encourage socks on little feet when it's chilly.

You’re frantically getting ready to leave the house, and your child is running around barefoot, despite the brisk morning chill. Here’s the first thing to try: keep a stash of warm, fluffy socks (think like those colorful pairs from Target) where your child can reach them. This way, it's their choice, not your demand.

Why It Happens

Kids love feeling in control. If putting on socks feels like another mandate, they might rebel. Also, some kids genuinely dislike the feel of socks — that itchy seam can be a dealbreaker.

3 Ways to Outsmart a Sock-Resistant Kid

  1. Make Socks Fun: Turn it into a game. “Can your socks help you sneak down the hallway like a spy?” Turns out, my son loves being a stealthy spy (still bumps into walls, but wears the socks).

  2. Give Options: Present two pairs. Say: “Red or blue today?” You'd be amazed how often the choice (or illusion of it) turns things around.

  3. Sockless Challenge: Challenge them to keep warm without socks. Say: “Let’s see how long you can keep your toes warm without them!” They soon realize the floor is chilly.

What Worked For Us

One rainy afternoon, my daughter was adamant about going sockless. I said, “Okay, try walking to the mailbox barefoot.” Halfway there, she turned back. Now, she asks for socks before outdoor ventures.

Nobody’s Perfect

I’ll admit, sometimes I still find a sockless child in the middle of winter. On those days, I just opt for some hot cocoa as a peace treaty.

Wrapping It Up

This won’t solve every sock standoff, but it’ll definitely reduce them. Try keeping a few pairs handy and making socks part of the outfit fun. Who knows — maybe your child will even start asking for those fuzzy critter socks by name.
