Getting Your Toddler Out of Your Bed

Help your child sleep in their own bed without the nightly drama.

When the Bedtime Circus Starts at 8 PM

Picture it: You’ve just tucked your little one into their own bed, kissed them goodnight, and retired to your own. Not five minutes later, there they are, pulling the sheets up and snuggling in for the night (again). I get it. I’ve made the same trek countless nights.

Why Are They Insistent on this Routine?

It's simple, really. Kids want comfort and security. Sleeping in your bed feels safe—it’s a big world with shadowy corners to a young mind. But while this makes sense on their level, it’s not exactly conducive to adult sleep cycles or, frankly, sanity.

Practical Steps to Reclaim Your Nights

  1. Create a Solid Bedtime Ritual: It's worth spending around 20 minutes on bedtime routines. We do bath time, story, and then a stuffed animal parade back to their own bed. The routine helps signal that it’s actually bedtime.
  2. The Bedtime Talk: Tell them something like, "Tonight you'll sleep in your bed. If you miss me, you can hug your teddy." This makes it clear while offering a comfort object (bonus if it smells like you).
  3. Gradual Retreat: Start by sitting on the floor next to their bed until they fall asleep, then slowly move closer to the door over successive nights. It can feel like an eternity the third or fourth time, but it does eventually work for most.

A Glimpse into Our Nights

Our trial (or rather, our adaptation) involved alternating a cozy bedtime playlist with white noise. Sure, there have been nights when my toddler sounded like a broken record of "Mommy, stay!" But around week two, she stopped emerging from her room at 9 PM sharp—most nights.

When to Seek Help

If your child’s sleeping patterns affect their daytime mood or your sanity, it might be time for a chat with a pediatrician. It’s not a cure-all, but it can identify other issues like anxiety or sensory challenges.

As the Night Draws In

Real change in bedtime rituals doesn’t happen overnight. I still mess this up sometimes. Don’t expect perfect results every night, but enjoy the small victories as they come.
