Sharing Isn't About Sharing
Picture this: It's a Saturday afternoon, and my five-year-old is clutching a toy truck like it's the last slice of cake at a birthday party. His three-year-old sister, eyes wide with longing, is convinced that this truck holds the key to eternal happiness (well, at least until snack time).
You'd think a simple prompt—"Can you share with your sister?"—would do the trick. But no. Instead, cue the whining symphony.
Forget the Pleas, Start with Play
Conventional wisdom says we should encourage sharing through politeness and gentle coaxing. That's all well and good until you find yourself on day four of trying to apply it without success. Sometimes I wonder if philosophers came up with these strategies rather than real parents living through five-year-old power struggles.
What actually helped us was setting up play scenarios where sharing naturally occurred—and not just because I said so. For example, starting a pretend restaurant where one child needs to serve plastic spaghetti really gets those gears turning. Rude customers tend not to get second helpings.
The Magic of Taking Turns
Sharing can often be tied too strictly to possession when it might be more about taking turns. Introducing games that explicitly require turn-taking teaches patience better than reading about it in any parenting book could.
I still mess this up sometimes by trying to intervene too early in their "negotiations." Actually, scratch that—I always intervene too early. Letting them work it out themselves can lead to unexpected solutions or agreements that don't include tears.
Avoid Fancy Terminology; Be Direct
Simplicity wins over complex psychological theories nine times out of ten (in my highly scientific observations). Phrases like "it will make her happy," or "we'll have more fun together," usually get less eye-roll from kids compared to some elaborate explanation about collective joy.
The Long Haul Approach
Don't expect miracles overnight—like potty training in three days (does it actually work?), cultivating sharing takes some time.
- Create environments where kids feel safe enough for trial and error.
- Praise both actions and attempts—even failed ones matter here.
Curiously enough, one evening while cleaning spilled juice off our ancient carpet (which seems always sticky despite frequent cleaning), I heard them negotiating whose block tower they’d knock down first—a small triumph disguised as mischief!
This Won’t Fix Everything but...
