An Unexpected Trick I Stumbled Upon
Let's set the scene. It was a typical Tuesday morning in the kitchen, sometime around 7:42 AM. My three-year-old was sprawled on the floor, deep in the throes of a Category 5 tantrum. The cause? Why Recognizing Feelings Works
The simple phrase 'You're really angry' disarmed him faster than any time-out ever had. I've since realized that acknowledging emotions is like naming a monster under the bed — once it's named, it loses its power (or at least some of it).
I admit I didn't believe this approach would work consistently at first. But after seeing my normally skeptical child pause mid-tantrum for the third or fourth time just because I'd said 'You're frustrated,' I became a convert.
Why Doesn't Everyone Do This?
Most advice revolves around ignoring tantrums or isolating kids until they calm down alone — which can sometimes backfire and lead to more screaming rather than less (as discussed here). Instead of dismissing their outbursts as irrational nonsense (which they often are), try validating their feelings by simply stating them.
A Few More Real Scenarios
The after-school chaos hits hard every day around 3 PM when my kids rush through the door like they're being chased by wild animals. My six-year-old declared she hates school more times than I could count last year (read about why that might happen). One afternoon she stormed into her room only to emerge five minutes later clutching her favorite stuffed platypus with defiance etched across her face. Instead of offering solutions she hadn't asked for or trying sympathy she wasn't ready for, all I did was say: 'You sound pretty upset about something.'
Shockingly enough, she rolled her eyes but sat down beside me. We got somewhere without tears or shouting matches (well actually there were still eye rolls but nothing's perfect).
It's Not Always Enough
This method isn't foolproof; moods can be mysterious creatures who decide when they'll settle down regardless of what you say. Rough patches will occur especially during screen time battles. It doesn't mean naming big feelings has failed; sometimes additional measures are needed too.

Younger toddlers need simpler terms ('Mad!' works wonders), while older kids appreciate specifics ('I see you're annoyed we can't go today'). Adaptations ensure you remain relevant amidst changing vocabularies and growing egos (welcome threenagers!).
Easing Into It With Practice
- Try starting small by pointing out obvious emotional cues daily — doesn't take much effort yet solidifies new habits slowly over months instead of weeks.
The same logic applied effortlessly one weekend evening during pre-bedtime meltdowns over bathwater temperature disputes...scratch that...it might've been an issue concerning mismatched pajamas but anyway exhaustion can blur details now days later!
