Every parent’s nightmare: taking a child who’s terrified of haircuts to the salon. But don't despair. Here's what actually worked for us —
First off, distractions are your best ally. Bring an iPad or just your phone if that's all you have. Load their favorite show or game. Kids can be surprisingly glued to an episode of 'Paw Patrol' (for reasons no one fully understands).
Next, choose the right time of day. This means avoiding naptime, mealtime, or any time your child might be grumpy (which might be any time that ends in 'y', I know). Late mornings, around 10:30, worked best for us.
Why does this fear happen? Well, scissors near the head are not exactly comforting. Loud clippers don't help either. And, let's be honest — haircuts are boring.
Solution #1: Bring a comfort item. A stuffed animal can work wonders. My daughter refused to let go of her pink bunny, and somehow, that little thing was like her emotional anchor.
Solution #2: Role play at home. Make haircut time a game. “I’m the hairdresser. What style do you want today?” It sounds silly, but this makes it routine rather than a novelty.
Solution #3: Offer choices. “Do you want to sit on the booster seat or on my lap?” Simple choices can give them a sense of control and reduce anxiety.
Here's how it played out for us last Saturday: My son, Tim, said, “I don’t want a haircut!” I replied, “Do you want the blue or red cape today?” He paused, distracted by the choice (and skipped the drama). Out came the iPad, he watched 'Bluey', and before he knew it, the cut was done.
Now, this won't solve everything. Sometimes, kids just have a rough day. A hairstyle isn’t worth a meltdown. If nothing works, try an at-home trim until they're a bit older. This is common — I've realized that hair grows back, so there's always another chance.
Keep it simple: pick a good time, bring distractions, try role play, offer choices, and hope for the best. There’s no perfect solution, but sometimes that’s okay.
