Taming the Bathtub Drain Fear

Calm your child's fear of the tub drain with creative play.

Let's Solve This Right Away

First, validate your child's feelings. Simple phrases like, "I understand why the drain looks scary," can go a long way. After that, try a quick distraction: hand them a rubber ducky (or any floating toy—ours is a well-loved yellow fish). It won't fix everything, but it's a start.

Why This Happens

Kids have vivid imaginations. What seems like a harmless hole to us might look like a portal to another dimension (or just a big, scary gulping mouth). This usually starts around bath time, typically around 7:30 p.m. when bedtime strategies unravel. You see, they're tired and the world just feels bigger.

Practical Solutions

  1. Talk Like a Superhero: Pretend the drain is a superhero. "Look! Captain Drain is protecting the bath water castle."

  2. Play a Game: Have them watch a few harmless toys swirl toward the drain (but not go down) to show that it doesn't eat things. You can say, "See, Mr. Squishy Bear is safe!"

  3. Count Down the Drain Dance: Make a countdown party out of it. "We count to ten, and it's party time! One, two, three..."

Example to Try

When I dealt with this with my third child (who needed different tactics than her older brother), I used hide-and-seek. Hide a toy in the bubbles and tell them, "Mr. Froggy is hiding from the drain monster. Can you find him before it’s empty?" Worked like a charm, except that one time when the bubbles ended up all over the floor.

Ending in Reality

Kids' fears can be unpredictable—but that's part of the gig, right? Not every trick will work every time. Tomorrow might see a whole new phobia crop up, who knows? For now, celebrate if your kid even steps into the tub without a fuss. That's a win.
