Toddlers are notoriously wiggly. Trying to get them to sit through a meal can feel like herding cats. Here's what worked for us: Start with timing. Dinner right after a busy play session or a TV show actually increases their fidget level. We shifted dinner to 6:30 pm and, surprisingly, it made a world of difference (though bedtime now feels closer than a fast food drive-thru).
Why They Won't Sit
Toddlers live in the moment. If they're engrossed in building Lego towers or pretending to be dinosaurs, sitting down seems incredibly dull. Expecting them to switch gears in an instant sets everyone up for frustration.
What Actually Helps
-
Turn the Table into a Game: One strategy that didn't sound promising at first was to make sitting seem like a game. “Can you sit like a statue for 10 counts?” I said, expecting failure. But there they were, frozen in place longer than I thought possible.
-
Engage Them with Conversation: Ask silly questions right before or during dinner. “If broccoli had a voice, what would it say?” A toddler engrossed in imagining broccoli speeches tends to forget they wanted to get up.
-
A Visual Timer: We used a kitchen timer set to visually count down 20 minutes. It's like a race against time they find amusing, for reasons I still can't quite grasp.
-
A Special Seat: A booster with their favorite character on it (ours was a Peppa Pig special) turned the chair into a personal throne, making them more inclined to sit enthusiastically.
An Example Scenario
When dinner was ready, I'd say, “Your royal Peppa chair is ready for a feast! Can you eat like a king?” My son would climb up, motivated by the quirky pretend play rather than the food.
There's a Catch
This doesn’t work perfectly every time. Some days, despite all the tricks, they might still end up under the table pretending to be a dog. You won't always win, but you will have more peaceful meals on average.
Try asking them to help set the table. Maybe it won't solve everything, but the involvement might boost their interest in staying put (well, sort of).
