Helping Kids Overcome Bath Time Fear

Simple steps to rebuild confidence after a bath slip scare.

When your child suddenly fears bath time due to a slip, don’t stretch your worry lines just yet. Here's a quick fix: start by letting them control a bit of the situation. Let them add their own bubbles (just a bit of that Mr. Bubble stuff) into the water. Giving them this small decision can ease their anxiety.

Now, why does this fear happen? Kids experience a slip in the tub as a loss of control, and that’s pretty terrifying for them. It’s not about the bath itself; it’s about the fear of what might go wrong. I remember, when my oldest screamed at the sight of the tub, it was less about getting clean and more about not wanting to feel vulnerable again.

So, what can you do? First, keep bath time short and sweet. Aim for around 10 minutes. Kids love routines, so keep it regular, perhaps just after dinner when they’re not too tired yet.

Here's what to say:

  • “You’re safe here with me.”
  • “Do you want to help me pour the water today?”

Start with dry runs (no pun intended). Let them step into an empty tub fully clothed at first. Maybe make a game of it. “Pretend you’re a pirate looking for treasure!” you might suggest. Gradually, reintroduce water—but splash-free at first.

Example in action: If they hesitate, try saying, “Let’s sit on the bath mat first. Look, it’s not slippery.” Once they’re comfortable, you can pour a bit of water on their feet from a small cup.

Admittedly, this method didn’t work with my second kid. She wasn't into games, so we tried bath crayons instead. Who knew drawing on tiles could be the hook she needed? This just proves there’s no universal solution.

As a precaution, always use a non-slip mat. I learned the hard way after the third or fourth slip incident. Also, those silly bath stickers—get them.

Ending with a small tip: this won’t solve everything, but it’ll make bath time less of a battlefield. And who knows? You might even have fun along the way.
