Try a New Approach
You've probably tried everything to keep your child calm during haircuts. Let's start differently: bring them on a quiet morning, around 10:30 AM, when the salon isn't packed. Less noise often means less chaos.
Why It Happens
Kids are little control enthusiasts. Having a stranger snip at their hair can feel a bit like being abducted by aliens. Plus, who knows what those clippers are saying under their breath?
What Works (Sometimes)
-
Storytime Distraction: Before you go, choose a book they love. I’ve had some luck with 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar'. It works better when you pair it with your storytelling voice, complete with silly accents.
-
Role Play at Home: Pretend to cut a doll's hair together a day or two before the appointment. Sometimes the drama declines if the characters in their make-believe world have been through it first.
-
Consistent Bribery: I know, we're not supposed to, but those bright red lollipops can be little lifesavers. Offer it (quietly) as a reward if they sit through the haircut without a meltdown.
Exact Words to Say
When the stylist approaches, try saying, "This is your superhero cape! Let’s see if it gives you superpowers to sit still for a bit." Kids love feeling like they're in on some magical secret.
Real Life Example
Last week, I told my son, "If you let them cut your hair, you can be the one to tell Grandma about the superhero cape." He actually sat through the whole thing, fascinated by the idea of a caped hero. (No idea why this worked, but it did. Solid chance it won’t next time, though.)
Quick Caveat
None of this is foolproof. There will still be those days when everything goes sideways. But maybe, just maybe, those lollipops (even the promise of one) can make this particular errand a tiny bit less dreadful.
