Crafting with Leaves and a Side of Ants
If you’ve ever helped a child collect leaves, you know it's less about aesthetics and more about grabbing anything within reach. Our craft adventure started on a late Saturday morning, which somehow turned into an ant safari. That's the thing with nature crafts: they rarely go as planned, but the unexpected parts are what kids love.
After gathering a hodgepodge of leaves (with some persistent ants hitching rides), we spread them out on our driveway. The goal was to make leaf rubbings using crayons and paper. If I’m honest, I still mess up identifying tree types beyond "maple" or "oak" (leaf biology wasn’t exactly my major). This activity is simple enough: place paper over a leaf, rub a crayon sideways, and voila — instant art.

Of course, no one tells you that evenly rubbing crayons requires dexterity only ambidextrous monkeys have mastered until it's too late. My son declared it was actually “a dinosaur jungle,” so there’s that.

Pinecones seem innocent until peanut butter gets involved. Step outside around noon when birds aren't expecting gourmet appetizers just yet (and before toddlers get nap time cranky). This project starts relatively sane: apply peanut butter all over pinecones using spatulas or spoons.
Quick tip from someone who learned the messy way — use old newspapers under your work area unless you enjoy scrubbing sticky remnants off patio bricks. Next comes rolling these gooey cones through birdseed till they resemble spiky medieval weapons kids love to make things awkwardly precise while dropping seeds onto grass instead of newspapers).

Who knew painting rocks could spark profound philosophical questions? Paints wash off easily unless sealed with lacquer afterward (I discovered this post factum after trying acrylic paints during a spontaneous shower disaster). Let’s call it 'life lessons'.
