Contrary to what many of us heard growing up, it can help to play with food—at least that's what worked for me after several failed attempts. Sounds silly, but my daughter began munching away just so she could complete her edible artwork in our chaotic kitchen (where dinner rarely starts on time).

Swapping plain white plates for those colorful IKEA ones seemed minor, but food looked different against a bright background. Did it make veggies taste better? No idea why this works, but sometimes something that simple can change a child's perception enough to give it a try.

It's not always about convincing them outright. Ever blended spinach into a banana smoothie? The color might become an alarming shade of green, yet surprisingly this didn't matter as long as I called it Hulk Juice or some other ridiculous name. By the third or fourth blend, both kids were asking for their 'super smoothie' without suspicion.

- Make popsicles with veggie-infused fruit juices in creative shapes (rocket ships were a hit here).
