When Packing Feels Like a Military Operation
So, you’ve decided to take your toddler camping. A bold move. One bright Saturday morning, while sipping the last of my lukewarm coffee (because hot drinks are a distant memory), I found myself knee-deep in child-sized sleeping bags and bug spray.
Let’s just say packing isn’t as simple as it sounds. You don’t need everything Pinterest tells you. In fact, if you have WaterWipes (or another durable brand) for quick cleanup sessions and some duct tape for emergency fixes — like that leaky tent flap — you're off to a good start.
Tent Decisions (Or How We Ended Up Sleeping Under the Stars)
A four-person tent should technically fit two adults and one toddler comfortably. In theory. The reality? Our little one thought the whole space was their playground at two in the morning.
If you’re feeling brave, consider those tents with separate rooms or at least good ventilation (trust me on this one). Otherwise, pack blankets to make a cozy cocoon where escape seems less appealing.
The Ground Truth
Your toddler might not appreciate a self-inflating mattress yet, but you'll thank yourself after realizing how cold and unforgiving the ground can be come 3 AM. Bring something more cushy for them than your old yoga mat.
Keep Them Busy: Until Nature Calls
You'd think nature would do most of the entertaining — streams to splash in and bugs to chase — but sometimes toddlers decide rocks aren’t all that fun after ten minutes. Pack plenty of simple outdoor toys like buckets or shovels.
- A magnifying glass can turn leaf gathering into an enthralling expedition.
- Bubbles don’t weigh much and can be mesmerising for hours, although controlling these soapy delights around campfires is another adventure altogether.

The Campfire Conundrum
S’mores were my Achilles' heel here. Sticky hands go places they shouldn’t with alarming regularity. Consider marshmallows sans chocolate if this sounds like trouble waiting to happen; graham crackers work wonders just by themselves.
An honest moment from our second trip: "Mommy! My marshmallow has ants!" Yes indeed, there were ants...and they didn’t stop partying through dinner time either.
