Why Your Toddler Darts Off

You arrive at the playground, and within seconds, your toddler has taken off like they're training for the toddler Olympics. First off, don't sweat it. Toddlers are curious, and to them, the playground is like a buffet where they want to sample everything at once.

Quick Tips to Keep Them Close

  1. Set Boundaries Early: When you arrive, make the boundaries clear. I usually say something like, "You can play between the swings and the big tree." Enforce it consistently. You might have to remind them 20 times (or more) before they actually stay put.

  2. Engage, Don't Chase: Ever notice how they seem to run faster if they think you're chasing them? Try not to make a game of it. Instead, get down to their level and engage them in what they're doing. "Wow, you're so fast. Can you show me your favorite slide?" works wonders.

  3. Offer Choices: If it's time to regroup, give them options. "We're heading over to the sandbox in five minutes. Do you want to walk there or hold my hand?" This gives them a sense of control while still following your plan.

  4. Use Props: Sometimes, I bring along a colorful ball or a small toy. It's amazing how a bright ball can capture their attention and keep them in one spot. Scratch that—it doesn't always work, but when it does, it's like magic.

  5. The Buddy System: Pairing up with another parent to watch both kids sometimes helps. They tend to stick together like little magnets when they're playing with a buddy.

Real Scenario

One time, I tried the "5-minute warning" trick with my daughter. I said, "We're leaving in 5 minutes. Do you want to get a snack first?" She was so focused on the possibility of a snack that she voluntarily stayed by my side. Surprise, surprise—it didn't work the next day.

When This Doesn't Fix Everything

This isn't foolproof, and there will be slip-ups (from them and from you). Try not to let it get to you. We've all yelled "Not again!" at least once when our kid zoomed off unexpectedly. Just keep trying different tactics until something works more often than not.
