I suppose it's inevitable when those first teeth start showing up—babies will test them out in whatever way they can, including on you. (That's why folks often ask when babies get their first tooth, hoping for some warning.) But your reaction matters more than you'd think.

Overreaction Is Counterproductive

I learned the hard way that yelling or pulling away too quickly only makes things worse. A startled baby might decide biting is an exciting game and continue doing it just to see what happens next. Instead, try making a calm but firm statement like "No biting." Easier said than done at 3 a.m., I know.

Why Not Just Stop?

You might feel tempted to stop breastfeeding altogether, especially if you're already sleep-deprived and covered in tiny bruises. (Been there.) But once this phase passes—and it does pass—you'll appreciate sticking with it, even if it's not always rosy.

Trying Different Positions

If you're willing to experiment—and risk some confusion—trying new nursing positions can help reduce biting incidents. Sometimes changing angles means they can't find the right leverage to chomp down. It's worth a shot. The side-lying position worked for us during daytime nursing sessions because I could subtly adjust without much fuss. Your mileage may vary with nighttime feedings since everyone is half-asleep anyway.

Alternative Distractions Work Wonders

You might need distractions for their little hands or tethers like teething necklaces (for you) so they don't focus entirely on biting as soon as latching starts happening again. Handing them something safe helps redirect their attention away from using those newly discovered pearly whites on your less-than-amused skin.

Some parents swear by simply breaking suction instead of reacting dramatically when dealt bites mid-breastfeed — honestly easier tried than said in my experience!
